About the project

Icarus Therapeutics is an AI-powered platform designed to match patients with the most relevant clinical trials and help pharmaceutical companies efficiently identify the best candidates for their studies. The system processes millions of patient and trial records, automatically evaluates eligibility, calculates relevance scores, and generates short human-readable justifications for every patient–trial match.
Alongside the AI-powered matching engine, the product was designed as a scalable digital ecosystem supporting both patient and sponsor journeys. The UX architecture covered onboarding, trial discovery and applications, secure communication between participants and coordinators, appointment coordination, progress tracking, and milestone-based compensation workflows.
In the first release, the team prioritized the most critical workflows required to launch and validate the product direction, while keeping the overall UX architecture scalable for future modules. The platform enables:

  • Finding the best trials for a given patient
  • Identifying top candidates for a clinical trial
  • Cross-matching and ranking top N patients or trials
  • Automatic eligibility and relevance scoring with explanations

The core idea behind the project was to simplify and automate an expensive, manual, and time-consuming clinical recruitment process for pharmaceutical companies, while ensuring clarity and usability for patients interacting with complex medical information.

Challenges that was faced and overcame

Large-scale data collection & processing: The platform needed to download and preprocess over 500,000 publicly available clinical trials from ClinicalTrials.gov and continuously keep the database updated.
